I just got word that the If I Were A House anthology, in which I have a poem, is now available for purchase on Amazon. This is a British endeavor, but I have provided the US link, with a price of $11.88. The proceeds from the book go to benefit Sleep Pod, an organization that provides portable shelters for the unhoused. In this season of giving, please consider making a purchase. Here is the link to the Amazon page:
www.amazon.com/dp/1914949137/ Thank you! #MusicMuse is a writing prompt that asks one to use the titles and/or lyrics from songs to come up with a poem. I've only been doing it for a few weeks, Here are my results:
1, Nine Inch Nails (Hurt) You pinned your hopes on me From those to whom much is given Much is expected Sent into the wilderness Expected to make miracles I will let you down I will make you hurt If I can't be me. II. Green Day (American Idiot) I must be an American Idiot Believing lies and tall tales The ones you told about me And about you. How foolish I must have seemed Not to question The version of reality presented Til the truth could no longer be contained Spilling out into the streets III. Aretha Franklin (Various) You didn't give me any respect A roadhog on the freeway of love I want a lover who's rock steady Makes mewant to jump to it This sister is tired of doing it for herself When I meet him gonna say I knew you were waiting for me. IV. Aretha Franklin (Various) Who's zooming who? Ain't no way for me to love you If you keep acting this way I want to be free of your chain of fools But I ain't never loved a man The way that I love you I didn't think Before making you my Dr. Feelgood. i. Thanksgiving she stitches together the makings of gratitude parameters of perfect womanhood. Meal almost ready, the dress reaches for the flame becomes molten polyester; Now grateful to have survived (molten) II. Her love for them was indomitable in the face of Jim Crow bleakness, Bone-crushing work. She outlived many of them Fueled by love and faith Few words needed when the Spirit shines. (indomitable) III. THANK YOU, GLINDA I was dismissed, scorned as If I couldn't handle the priesthood of tech doors shut and locked I turned to women's work discovered the priesthood of life would unlock the doors of tech; I had the keys all along. (handle) IV. Were your actions responsible for the shifting of the stars? The turning of the tides? The rise and setting of the sun? I gave you that power And when you left, it wrecked me. I spent a lifetime Gluing the pieces back together to form a new version of myself, vulnerable and true. V. Treat failure as an experience. On Halloween? Treat failure? Experience os what you get when you didn't get what you wanted. Candy corn instead of chocolate Fruit instead of gummy bears Not getting that dream job or date. Life's like that.
